PPSI to Showcase 3 Essential Industrial Inkjet Technologies for Printers and Converters at Labelexpo

August 29, 2016

Prototype & Productions Systems, Inc. (PPSI) will be showing live printing with three distinct examples of its DICETM inkjet technology at Labelexpo Americas 2016 in Rosemont, IL, September 13-15, 2016.

  • The DICEweb system adds high-resolution UV color inkjet printing to existing roll-to-roll equipment. It converts almost any existing flexo press to a hybrid printer that combines the best of flexo printing - for special colors, whites, pre-coats and varnishes - with up to 6 colors of digital print. Best of all, it allows printers to use their existing investments in finishing equipment, registering the digital print to inline die-cutting or sheeting equipment, without the need to move rolls.
  • A custom DICEpress printer will be shown as an example of PPSI's ability to design inkjet print systems that are tailored to a customer's unique requirements. The DICEpress printer on display features 12.5 inch (317mm) wide CMYK printing, expandable to 15 inches (381mm), on an 18 inch web, with servo-driven unwind and rewind modules. The printer includes an accumulator that allows the web to back up to avoid wasting material, and a lamination station. The modular design of the DICEpress allows the easy addition of coating or flexo print stations, and semi-rotary or rotary die-cutting systems.
  • Electron Beam (EB) drying technology from ebeam Technologies (formerly PCT Systems) will be featured in a proof-of-concept demonstration of food-safe digital printing of labels and packaging. A DICElab printer that uses EB-curable inkjet inks to print onto a multi-layer flexible packaging film will be shown together with an ebeam Inkjet Dryer unit. By avoiding the potentially harmful photo initiators used in UV-curable inks, EB printing has the potential to allow short-run, variable-data printing of food packaging materials.

The wide range of applications of its core DICETM inkjet technology highlights PPSI's skills as the custom automation company for industrial-strength digital printing solutions. According to company president Chuck Raymond, "Many of our projects are for large consumer goods companies who prefer to remain anonymous, so it's always a pleasure to be able to show our inkjet integration capabilities at Labelexpo."

Using Simulation to Decide on Digital

Published on November 17, 2014

Chris Lynn, Principal at Hillam Technology Partners LLC and VP of Sales & Marketing for Prototype and Production Systems in an article on Label & Narrow Web's website discusses how simulation can be used to make the right decision on going digital. Chris has used manufacturing simulation software to look at throughput and profitability of hybrid printing (combining flexo and digital print inline in a single operation) compared with stand-alone digital printers that require separate operations to prime, laminate and die-cut label stock.

First Tape & Label Orders Second DICEweb Industrial Inkjet Printer

Plymouth, Minnesota (October 7, 2014) - First Tape & Label, an industry-leading label printer and specialty converter has ordered their second DICEweb color inkjet system from Prototype & Production Systems, Inc (PPSI) of Plymouth, MN less than a month after getting their first DICEweb system up and running.

Based in Texarkana, AR, First Tape & Label manufactures, distributes, and services pressure-sensitive adhesive coated products.

“The DICEweb is a win giving us speed, efficiency and perfect printing every time,” said David Haak, founder and owner of First Tape & Label, “We get better consistency with the DICEweb printer than our flexo press. It doesn’t matter if we print the label today, tomorrow or a month from today, the colors look the same.”

Mr. Haak adds: “We are able to print over twice as many labels per shift as we did with our previous inkjet printer.  With the DICEweb we can queue up jobs and run three lanes across because every lane can be different. This reduces our waste and increase our productivity for short runs compared to conventional flexo. With all the advantages the DICEweb has given us it was an easy decision to order another one.”

Chuck Raymond, President of PPSI commented: “First Tape & Label and PPSI’s partnership is a great example of how we can take a break-through technology like the DICEweb and create competitive advantage for a label converter. DICEweb turns any flexo press into a state-of-the-art digital printer, and it supports First Tape & Label’s promise of next day delivery to its customers.”

Prototype & Production Systems, Inc is a digital printing and custom automation design & manufacturing company based near Minneapolis, MN. Topflight Goes Hybrid with DICEweb Inkjet Engine

Plymouth, Minnesota (July 30, 2014) - Topflight Corporation, an industry leading label printer and specialty converter, is the latest company to install a DICEweb color inkjet system from Prototype & Production Systems, Inc (PPSI) of Plymouth, MN. Running at double the speed of many stand-alone digital printers, DICEweb is the new generation of PPSI's inkjet color engines for adding quality digital color capability to narrow-web presses.

Based in Glen Rock, PA, Topflight has been meeting the needs of demanding customers in the medical device, pharmaceutical and personal care industries for over 60 years. With its experience in combining innovative technology with conventional printing and finishing processes, Topflight turned to PPSI to supply a custom-designed DICEweb system to provide digital printing capability in-line with one of its more than 20 flexographic presses.

DICEweb is a 1-6 color add-on UV inkjet print engine that can be retrofitted to an existing flexographic printing press. Because it mounts on the press, the printer can make use of existing investments in finishing equipment as well as laying down primer, white or varnish with the flexo units. This gives the printer the best of both digital and analog worlds: digital printing for short runs and variable data, accurately registered to conventional flexo printing and inline finishing.

According to Topflight's Director of Operations, Tonya D. Nye: "We saw the need to go digital because we are getting more customers who want short runs and variable data labels. We looked at some stand-alone printing systems, but we have several million dollars' investment in dies, so we wanted to be able to print digitally without having to invest in new tooling. The DICEweb system gives us the 4-color digital printing capability we wanted, while making use of one of our custom flexo presses to apply primer and to die-cut."

Adds Plant Manager Brian Litvak: "Our operators have been through the DICE™ training and we are getting a good understanding of how to get the most from the system. We're a lean manufacturing plant, and we're organizing the workflow to maximize throughput. The printer runs at over 160 feet/minute, which is faster than most digital printers, so getting the set-ups and job queuing right is important."

Chuck Raymond, President of PPSI commented: "We're delighted to have Topflight as a customer for our newest product. We added features like an automatic printhead cleaning station with quality-focused users like Topflight in mind, and we are looking forward to a long relationship as our technology develops to keep pace with their needs."

Topflight Corporation is a privately held, ISO 9001:2008 and 13485:2003 certified company which manufactures primary and secondary labels, precision die-cut components, shrink sleeves and conductive parts for the Medical Device, Pharmaceutical, Cosmetics and Personal Care, Electronics and Durable Goods industries. Headquartered in Glen Rock, PA, Topflight also has locations in Switzerland, Venezuela and Australia.

Prototype & Production Systems, Inc is a digital printing and custom automation design & manufacturing company based near Minneapolis, MN. In business for over 25 years, PPSI delivers roll-fed and conveyor-based inkjet printing equipment and inks to the printing and packaging industry, and to major brand-owners.
